How to tell if an image was made with ChatGPT

Images made in ChatGPT often come with C2PA Content Credentials attached to the downloaded original. While that signature survives it is the strongest evidence there is, but a screenshot or a messenger hop removes it easily.

Originals carry a signature

OpenAI attaches a C2PA manifest that declares the image as AI-generated. Origma checks separately whether the signature is valid, whether the signer is on a trust list and whether the file changed after signing. A valid signature declaring AI generation supports «Likely AI-generated» without any pixel analysis.

Signatures fall off easily

A screenshot, a messenger send or re-saving in an editing app strips the manifest. A missing signature does not mean the image is not AI, and whether it never existed or was removed can only be told when traces remain.

Without a signature, detectors decide

Copies that lost the signature are judged from pixels by five image detectors. The box above shows gpt-image originals measured with those detectors. A copy recompressed several times can score lower than the same image did originally.

The fastest way to check

Scan the file as you received it. If the result says there is no signature, ask the sender for the file they first got. A signature confirmed on the original is the strongest and most reproducible answer.

Frequently asked

Is a C2PA signature conclusive?
A valid signature that declares AI generation is strong evidence. Valid is not the same as trusted, so we also show whether the signer is on a trust list.
Are screenshots of ChatGPT images caught?
The signature is gone, so it rests on the detectors. Above the threshold it is detected; when unclear it is inconclusive.
What if ChatGPT edited a real photo?
Edited outputs may also be signed, and that is read as a record that AI was used in the edit. Without a signature, alteration analysis and detectors are read together.
Can I see the signature myself?
The provenance axis of the report shows the manifest, signer and verification result. You can export it as JSON and verify it again with another tool.
